Dr Willem Volschenk
Dr Willem Volschenk consults in pain medicine through Hunter Pain Specialists in Newcastle and the Central Coast. He operates at Hamilton Day Surgery, Lingard Private Hospital and Newcastle Private Hospital.
Dr Volschenk attained his primary medical degree at the University of Pretoria in South Africa and completed his postgraduate Specialist Anaesthetic training in Natal, becoming a Fellow of the South African College of Anaethetists. He acquired his postgraduate Australian Anaesthetic and Pain Management Fellowships in Australia holding a dual fellowship in both Pain Medicine and Anaesthesia.
Dr Volschenk fulfilled the role of the Director of Anaesthesia at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital in Newcastle after immigrating to Australia. He subsequently became the supervisor of neurosurgical anaesthetic training for the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthesia at the John Hunter Hospital as a Visiting Medical Officer. Currently, he is the supervisor of training for pain medicine at Hunter Pain Specialists, as an accredited training site for the Fellowship of Pain Medicine of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthesia.
His special interest is in neuropathic pain conditions and spinal pain. He is involved in continuing research through Genesis Research Services, including drug and device clinical trials in pain medicine. As part of Hunter Pain Specialists, Dr Volschenk regularly involves himself in GP education. He is a member of the International Association for the Study of Pain and the International Neuromodulation Society.
