Dr Lay Gan

Dr Lay Gan is a clinical gastroenterologist specialising in general gastroenterology and hepatology. She practices at Hunter Gastroenterology and serves as a Staff Specialist at John Hunter Hospital, and a Visiting Medical Officer at Lingard Private Hospital, Hunter Valley Private Hospital, and Newcastle Endoscopy Centre.

Dr Gan earned her medical degree from The University of Tasmania in Hobart. She completed her internship and began basic physician training at Launceston General Hospital. In 2006, she relocated to Newcastle, where she completed her basic physician training before pursuing advanced gastroenterology training at John Hunter Hospital. She completed her fellowship at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney in 2010.

Due to her passion for medical research, Dr Gan was awarded an NHMRC postgraduate clinical research scholarship to pursue a PhD with the Liver Research Group at the Australian National University Medical School in Canberra. She earned her PhD in 2014 with her thesis titled ‘Mechanistic Study of Cholesterol Lipotoxicity Pertinent to NASH’. While completing her PhD, she worked as a gastroenterologist and general physician at Calvary Hospital, Canberra. She returned to Newcastle in 2013.

Dr Gan’s current areas of interest include inflammatory bowel disease and metabolic steatotic liver disease. She has a keen interest in liver disease research and is actively involved in clinical research, serving as a principal investigator for multiple clinical trials focusing on metabolic fatty liver diseases, such as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), as well as inflammatory bowel disease, and eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE).
